The Soil CRC’s PhD student program underpins our four research programs to build capability in the future of Australia’s soil research. Our PhD cohort brings together a huge wealth of knowledge, experiences, professional networks and capabilities for our students to engage with and learn from.

In 2025–26, 11 Soil CRC students completed their PhDs, bringing the total number of completions since 2017 to 26. An additional seven students submitted their thesis during the year.

With a total of 22 active PhD students remaining, we are well on the way to reaching our target of 40 PhD completions during the life of the Soil CRC.

Attending her graduation at Murdoch University in early 2026, Dr Tania Monir said she is, “Grateful to the Soil CRC for helping me fulfil my dream and giving me the opportunity to contribute to soil research.”
Dr Linda Wirf was joined by Soil CRC Program 1 Leader Professor Catherine Allan at her Charles Sturt University graduation ceremony in March this year.

Soil CRC PhD Program Manager Dr Cassandra Wardle has watched with pride as our PhD students have grown as researchers and confident professionals, developing the skills, networks and resilience that will shape their careers.

“Research is rarely a straightforward path. Every PhD candidate faces challenges, unexpected outcomes and moments of uncertainty. What continues to impress me is their strength and perseverance,” she said.

“Supporting our students as they navigate hurdles and ultimately succeed is incredibly rewarding, and it’s such a joy to see their hard work recognised.”

Soil CRC PhD graduates continue to build impactful careers across a range of fields, from agricultural research and academia to natural resource management and public service.

Because of the additional skills, knowledge and industry awareness built through being part of the Soil CRC, our PhD graduates are often highly sought after by prospective employers.
